प्रश्न – मान लिजिए आपके पास 8 सिक्के हैं। सारे सिक्के देखने मे बिलकुल एक जैसे हैं लेकिन उनमे से एक सिक्का नकली है। नकली सिक्का बाकी के सिक्को से थोड़ा भारी है। आपके पास एक तराजू है किंतु बाट नही है। तराजू पर आप केवल दो ही बार ही तौल सकते हैं। तो बताइए सिर्फ दो बार तराजू का इस्तेमाल कर के आप नकली सिक्के की पहचान कैसे करेंगे???

पहले तीन-तीन सिक्के निकालकर तराजू के पलड़ो पर रखें। अगर दोनो पलड़े बराबर हैं तो इसका मतलब बाकी बचे दो सिक्को मे एक नकली सिक्का है। अब उन दोनो सिक्को को एक-एक पलड़े मे रखकर तौलें जो पलड़ा भारी होगा उस पर रखा सिक्का नकली होगा।

लेकिन अगर तीन-तीन सिक्के रखने पर एक पलड़ा भारी हुआ तो उस पलड़े मे रखे तीन सिक्को मे से एक सिक्का नकली होगा। अब उन तीन सिक्को को लेकर उन मे से दो को एक-एक पलड़े पर रखे अगर दोनो पलड़े बराबर हुए तो तीसरा बचा हुआ सिक्का नकली है। और दोनो मे से एक पलड़ा भारी हुआ तो भारी पलड़े वाला सिक्का नकली है।
